TOP TECH Microsoft buys Skype

In one of the most interesting corporate buyouts of the year, Microsoft last month closed a deal that saw it gulp up VoIP messaging service Skype for $8.5 billion. The deal (Microsoft’s biggest since 2007) has been described by analysts as an overpayment for Skype, which posted a $7 million loss last year. Either way, with the acquisition Microsoft will be taking some 660 million Skype users under its corporate wing. Skype has for long been a threat to voice carriers as it offers instant messaging and video calling over the internet for a fraction of the price. Its technology may now be heading to Windows Phone 7 or even the Xbox 360’s Kinect.
